Sundak Beach

Sundak Beach
My Sundak (Sundak Beach). Not too far brom Baron Beach, precisely at Sidoharjo Village, Tepus Sub-district,  Gunungkidul, Yogyakarta, is the peaceful  tone of Sundak Beach. As you come across this beach, you will pass among a hilly road surrounded by green trees to pleasure your view of the nature.  Although located near Baron, the condition of Sundak Beach is not quite the same. Sundak serves as a more “reserved” beach, making it more quite than Baron. There are not too many fishermen in this beach due to the contour of the beach that’s not too friendly to fishermen.
Although Sundak is more quite and desolated than Baron, the magnificence of its scenery and landmarks are not to be ignored. The pure white sand and rocky hills standing beside the beach are only just some of the wonders this beach has to offer. On the east side of the beach is located a resort consisting of 2 cottages and a restaurant. Having a chance to stay in the resort is a rare but dearing opportunity since you can have a complete view of the beach as if it were your private property. During the sunrise and sunset, you can watch clearly one of the most amazing events that mother nature can give.

Sundak Beach
Sundak BeachIf you care to have a dip in the water, feel free to do so since the turquoise colored water is shallow. But always watch out for corals arranged beneath the water. Sundak Beach is administratively located at Sidoharjo Village, Tepus Sub-district, in the district of Gunungkidul, Yogyakarta Province. The history of the site is also an insight to be known. According to the story, there was once a mosque on the west side of the beach and a coral cave on the east. In the past, these two landmarks were submerged in sea water. The name of the beach was currently named Wedibelah (sand split), until an interesting occurance happened. In the afternoon of 1976, there was a dog who was wandering around the shore looking for food. It then entered the cave and managed to find a sea urchin inside. Because of the hunger, the dog tried to eat the urchin but failed to do so because the urchin kept on avoiding. But eventually, the dog succeeded in eating half of the sea urchin’s body and decided to exit the cave while carrying his food. It was then that the owner of the dog Arjasangku saw a half of the sea urchin’s body in the dog’s mouth. Since then the name Wedibedah was changed into Sundak, an abbreviation for asu (Javanese word for dog) and landak(urchin).

In the night, if you can’t afford or refuse to stay at a cottage, you can just put up a tent and while doing so, you can enjoy some fish grilling experience for a cheap rate, while sitting outside and enjoying the night breeze. There’s also a ready-to-eat grilled fish if you don’t feel like grilling on your own. All in all, the experience is nowhere to be found elsewhere.
